In recent months, more and more people are choosing to install Anti-Virus software on their Macs. Whether you decide to or not, here is an overview of the choices you have to get your Mac protected. All these options are FREE. You don’t need to pay!
Benefits of Installing an Antivirus on Mac. Installing an antivirus system adds an extra layer of security to your Mac. Option 1: Nothing! Level of protection: Low You can get away without having any anti-virus software as long as you are careful. OSX does a pretty good job of asking you for your password when you are downloading new software or updates. Ask yourself if you are sure you know what you are installing. Mountain Lion also has some extra security built in. Turn on Gate-Keeper to only allow new software from developers known by Apple.
Option 2: A virus scanner. Recommended Software: Level of protection: Medium A Virus scanner will not alert you the moment you get a virus but if you are concerned that something is lurking about in your Mac you can ask it to scan your entire hard drive to check if it is infected. The downside is that you may of had a virus for a while before you decide to run the scanner.
Although you can set it to run every week or month. Just try and remember to use it every once in a while. IAntiVirus will also check your facebook account for threats too! Option 3: Constant Anti-Virus Monitoring and Protection Recommended Software: Level of protection: High I am really impressed with Sophos. This is a fully featured anti-virus package.
Unlike a scanner, It constantly monitors your connections and detects any threats instantly. You won’t need to remember to scan or update as it’s taken care of automatically.

If any viruses are found (even if they’re designed for windows), it is safety removed in seconds. We asked for Luke to come in for a training day with our staff since we were taking over the running of a Mac office and all had very little experience of using them. We found the half a day of training exceptionally useful. We were taught basic things, however we could already see that they would greatly increase our productivity and understanding of how to get the best out of using the Mac computers. The session was the best of both worlds of being taught the basics that we were lacking but without going too basic and wasting time. Will definitely be getting Luke back in again soon!
